when does advertising become art?

Rob, 'wordsman --- Here'sanotherthought after ourconversation lastnight spinningout of the NotreDame writingfestival talk. Whathappens to advertising once the productbeingadvertised is nolonger forsale? Once the economic reality ofthe pitch evaporates? Doesn't advertising then undergo a kindof alchemical transformation and become simply wellforlackofabetterword art? Canit them be appreciated onitsownmerits as wordsandimagery? At an historical remove? In the sameway as I canappreciate religious art as art withoutbelongingto or believingin the religion?
